Welcome to Utsalady Elementary! 2016-17
Hello, my name is Mrs. Colleen Keller and I am currently in my ninth year as the principal at
Utsalady Elementary. This summer I celebrated 28 years of marriage to my husband, Matt.
When not working I spend my time rooting on the Seattle Mariners and Seahawks, playing with
my three small dogs, bicycling with my husband and spending time with my two grown children.
Since second grade, I always dreamed of being a teacher. Before becoming a principal I worked
as a teacher for 17 years. During those years I taught in many various roles and grade levels (1 st grade;
1st -3 rd Multiage; K-5 Music; 6 th -8 th Reading Intervention; 6 th Grade Language Arts; 6 th Grade
Social Studies). I love my job. I love being in the classroom with the students, working with my
staff, interacting and problem-solving with parents all in an effort to help our students feel success.
Utsalady Elementary is located on beautiful Camano Island in Washington State. Utsalady was
opened in 2000 and has been so well maintained that many people are surprised to find out it’s
sixteen years old. We currently serve around 300 students in kindergarten through fifth grades.
The staff and families at Utsalady believe in the potential of every child. With this in mind we
have many programs in place to help each child feel connected to their school, staff and peers.
These programs include Morning Announcements, Celebration Assemblies, Peer Buddies, K-Kids Club,
Color Guard, Green Team, Safety Patrol, Extra Mile, Eagle Squad and much more.
Our Elementary is strongly supported by an active parent’s group: The Utsalady Booster Club.
Through fund-raising, volunteering an great planning, they provide our students with classroom
volunteers, evening programs (BINGO Night, Skate Night, Harvest Festival, Movie Night, etc),
playground equipment, musical instruments, student assemblies, school garden, field trips and
many other activities and supplies enhancing our students’ learning opportunities.
Utsalady is dedicated to meeting the social, emotional and academic needs of each child. We
are committed to no bullying and continually educate and support our students in recognizing,
standing up to and reporting any bullying activity.
Utsalady values their volunteers. Our volunteers come from a variety of sources and
backgrounds. We have parents, grandparents, community members, senior citizens, aunts,
uncles and even cousins volunteering their time. Three years ago we started a new program
called “WatchDOGS (Dads Of Great Students)”. This program promotes male role models by
encouraging a day of volunteering at our school. Are you interested in volunteering at our
school? Give our office a call (360-629- 1260) and we will get you set up!
Utsalady Elementary houses a wonderful staff, great families and most importantly… incredible
children. Every day we work to stay true to our mission, “Together we teach, learn and grow.”
