Mrs. Julie Knight, Stanwood-Camano School District’s 2008-09 Teacher of the Year, was nominated to the Northwest ESD 189 for further consideration to become Washington State’s Teacher of the Year. Even though Julie was not chosen for the next step, Utsalady staff is proud of her and everything she has done for our building and district over the years. Mr. Buck Evans, NW ESD 189 Assistant Superintendent of Operations, presented Mrs. Knight with a certificate of appreciation, which also shared comments from past students, and staff who have worked with her. We ask that despite recent fashion trends, that parents and students remember that school is a place for learning and that appropriate clothing is expected.
The following “4-3-2-1-0” dress code is strictly adhered to at Utsalady.
- Necklines should be no lower than 4 fingers below the clavicle notch
- Tops must have a minimum of a 3 finger strap and show no undergarment
- Skirts and shorts should be no shorter than the finger tips of the 2 arms stretched straight down
- “Tummies” and underwear should not show when 1 arm is stretched straight up
- 0 tolerance for jeans, shorts, etc. that are too low and expose the student’s back end when sitting, bending over or otherwise engaged in any activities.
Due to multiple injuries last year, flip-flops are no longer allowed at Utsalady.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING CHANGES TO 2009/10 BUS ROUTES
Stanwood-Camano School District’s funding is decreasing in 2009-10 because of the state budget deficit and declining student enrollment. As a result, the district needs to reduce costs in all areas. Unfortunately, these reductions will affect students, families, and district employees. The transportation department has had to make the following adjustments due to these challenging funding declines:

Julie Knight has always wanted to work in schools. “From the moment that I learned there was a place called school, I have wanted to be a part of that environment,” said the Utsalady Elementary School teacher.
Knight has been a part of Stanwood-Camano schools for 25-years and touched the lives of countless students, colleagues, and parents. She finds a way to individualize learning for students by relating it to topics they are interested in.
This spring while meeting with a student, Knight discovered the boy’s love of reptiles. So she purchased some books about reptiles, bought him a composition book and some pens and pencils then placed them all in a container that is meant to be a home for a lizard if the boy wanted to eventually get one.

Read Across America Activities Culminate with Silly String! |

March is always an exceptionally good time at Utsalady because we have our own version of “March Madness.” Students read the whole month to earn prizes from the Everett AquaSox such as a free ticket to a game in June, getting a free baseball at the game, a kid’s meal at Outback Steak House, and a bookmark with the AquaSox schedule for this year’s season. Everybody reads to get those great prizes, and at the assembly to culminate our whole month of reading, we had classes come on stage and show off their great reading skills. Many thanks to Mrs. Stone’s third grade class for a delightful rendition of “Green Eggs and Ham.” Mrs. Hofbauer’s third graders recited a poem called “Weird” about a family doing silly things just because it’s spring. Mrs. Dowhaniuk had kindergarten and first graders sing four songs one of which was about Dr. Seuss. The silliest group to get up was our own staff for their Vocabulary Fashion Show. Different staff members came dressed up as a vocabulary word of their choice…like menagerie, precipitation, and victorious. If you didn’t see the show, Mr. Leach’s showing of fearless was very runway worthy! We think he may have missed his calling as a famous model.
Yet, the even bigger incentive to read this March was to earn the honor of getting to spray the principal with silly string. The top two readers from each grade came up on stage and on the count of three, started to spray Mrs. Keller! That was great fun!! She was covered from head to toe with different colored silly string. We wonder what Mrs. Knight will think up for next year’s reading challenge?

Tedrow/Schmidt 5th graders enjoy Japanese art |

On March 31st, Mrs. Tedrow/Ms. Schmidt's 5th
grade class had the opportunity to have Mr. & Mrs.
Kikuchi from
Japan teach us how to basket weave.
Mrs. Branch, an active local
community member,
put together this art activity and assisted in the
basket weaving. Each student hand made their
own basket, a tradition
that Mr. & Mrs. Kikuchi
followed in Japan. This took great
patience and
time to complete, but the end product was well
worth it!

Utsalady families gathered on the evening of March 19th to celebrate our reading and math progress. Our wonderful district math coaches had put together a Math Metric Olympics with six stations to toss and guess and enjoy math with some students from the high school Honor Society. Our reading specialist put together some games that families could sit down and play and interact. One such fun activity was finding Dollar Words that combines reading and math. Many new words were found that night, and families are continuing to find words to give to Mrs. Knight in the reading room. The Booster Club put on a fabulous book swap where students brought books and found “new” books to take home. The Booster Club also sold popcorn and ice cream bars. Yum! The smell of popcorn sure made the fun even better. We can’t wait for next year’s Family Night!
