Inclusive Playground
(inˈklo͞osiv ˈplāˌground): a place where every child's courage and
kindness is recognized, regardless of their abilities, and ALL students
have an opportunity to enjoy PLAYING, LEARNING, and GROWING together.
Utsalady
Elementary and it's Booster Club have been working on making the dream
of a playground accessible to ALL of our students for over 5 years.
Last fall, we won $15,000 in Inclusive Playground Equipment from LSI
Playground Company (YEAH!). A 2 bay swing set with 2 ADA swings and 2
regular swings, an Omni Spinner (sort of Merry-go-round with headrests),
and a Sensory Wall are the 3 pieces of equipment we were able to
acquire through the essay contest.
We are responsible for all of the costs
of surfacing and installation. In public playground projects, there are
many ADA and IPEMA requirements we must abide by and they incur costs
that are daunting. Additionally, we worry about kids in wheelchairs
spinning their wheels in the wood-chips and staff hurting their backs
pushing kids through the same material. For that reason, we have made
it a priority that this playground should have handicap accessible tiles
around the equipment essential to our kids with mobility issues. That
is where we need your help! Each rubberized tile costs $22.50 and we
need 404 of them total to do ALL that we want to do (approx. half the
playground surface). Time to put on your sweet smiles and ask your
supporters to give to this very special cause!
Donations are tax deductible as Utsalady Booster Club is a 501c3 Organization

We have created a survey and ask your assistance in providing feedback to help us better our partnership with you. As a part of our quest for continuous improvement, we are soliciting your perception of your school’s engagement and responsiveness to your interests and concerns about your child’s education.
Parent Survey
Results of the survey will be analyzed by school staff to determine areas where we can improve. Results will be published in each school’s annual performance report
Thank you, in advance, for your participation.

|
|
|
|
Written by Utsalady Staff
|
|
Friday, 25 January 2013 |
On the morning of Wednesday, January 16th there was a buzz in the gym as the spelling Bee took place. Utsalady's 11th Annual Spelling Bee was filled with anxious spellers from grades three, four, and five. Everyone was excited to find out who would be the spelling champion of Utsalady. Teachers have been having spelling bees in their classrooms to pick their four spelling participants.
Who were our Utsalady Champions?
The 3rd grade winners were:
1st place: Jolene Henrikson - Mrs. Hofbauer
2nd place: tied were Grace Henken – Mrs. Allen and Maya Macdonald – Ms. Anderson

The 4th/5th grade winners were:
1st Ismael Bhandal – Mrs. Mckinnon
2nd place: tied were Maria Kinsman – Ms. Johnson, Linh Ngo – Mrs. Oldow and Kayla Vaughn – Ms. Johnson
3rd place: tied were Ava Smith – Mrs. McKinnon, Ryan Smith – Mrs. Mailloux

Good job and congratulations to all spellers and winners.

Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) is an innovative
program aimed at increasing male involvement in schools across the county. Organized by the National Center for
Fathering, this program gives schools the structure to bring fathers and father
figures (grand dads, uncles, etc.) into the building to provide positive male
role models for the students and to enhance school safety.
Utsalady Elementary School is proud to be starting the Watch D.O.G.S. program this year as a Watch D.O.G. friendly school. Contact Marcus Bresko at

Utsalady was visited by the Taproot Theater Group! Taproot preformed one of their Bullying Prevention plays called "Wild Wes"
Giddy-up! A new Ranger’s in town and ready to start at a new school. Wes
has an imagination as big as a Texas prairie, but when his family moves
from the Wild West to the Northwest, he crosses paths with Lily L’Amour
who is “tougher and meaner than a rattlesnake with a sunburn.” Will Wes
be able to face the bullying and make new friends? Or will he lose his
territory and spend recess in hiding for the rest of the year?
Education Goals:
- Bullying Prevention
- Recognize, Refuse, Report
- How to be an Ally
- Forming Friendships
